Agence France Presse: US Poised to Yank Funding from UN Population Fund over Abortion Claims The United States is poised to announce that it will withdraw millions of dollars in funding for the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) over charges it is promoting abortion and forced sterilization of women in China, US officials said Sunday. The announcement, which could come as early as this week, will accompany the release of a report critical of UNFPA's activities in China that have drawn fire from conservative US lawmakers and anti-abortion activists, the officials said. The State Department had been expected to make the announcement -- which will cancel 34 million dollars in UNFPA funding -- on July 15, but a senior department official said the timing had been slightly delayed. "We're not ready to go on this for Monday," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity. "The language is still being prepared and the lawyers are still going over it." "Still, the intention is to put out the report and the decision at the same time and that will be soon," the official said. "It's a tough decision and one we'll be happy to explain when we announce it," the official said.

Condoms Count: Meeting the Need in the Era of HIV/AIDS When it comes to providing condoms for the prevention of HIV, donor countries are coming up short -- providing a fraction of what is needed to help slow the spread of this devastating disease in the developing world.

An estimated eight billion condoms are needed annually for protection against HIV/AIDS in developing countries and Eastern Europe, yet donor countries are contributing less than one billion. This is approximately the amount contributed a decade ago: In spite of the dramatic increase in the number of HIV/AIDS cases worldwide over the past ten years, the number of condoms donated has remained the same.

The PAI report, Condoms Count: Meeting the need in the Era of HIV/AIDS, documents the failure of the donor community-and many of the countries most affected by AIDS-to adequately support programs that promote and distribute male and female condoms.

AUDIO FEATURE: BRAZIL: Model for success? July 10, 2002:

Suggested intro/cue material for presenter:

This week at the UN AIDS conference in Barcelona, the Brazilian government issued a challenge to the international pharmaceutical industry. It unveiled a plan to help other developing countries manufacture copies of AIDS drugs. The plan draws widely from Brazil's own experience since the mid-nineties, when it became the first country to sidestep patent laws on AIDS drugs by making cheap versions in state-owned laboratories. The policy has had huge success, enabling Brazil to distribute drugs free-of-charge to people living with HIV and AIDS, and to drastically reduce its AIDS death rate. Yet, until now, no other country has adopted the same policy - and today only 4 per cent of people living with HIV and AIDS in the developing world receive any drugs. A report from the international organisation, VSO, investigates why other countries have been unable to follow Brazil's example until now. From Sao Paulo, Andre Muggiati reports.

Raising awareness of HIV/AIDS in Rural China In the face of government restrictions on reporting on HIV/AIDs, it is often up to individuals to provide information, as Yuen Chan finds out in rural China.

Suggested intro/cue material for presenter: According to UN estimates, more than one and a half million people are infected with HIV in China. The government has now admitted that there is an AIDS problem. But it's still difficult for the media to cover the story openly and for the public to get accurate news and information. In this climate of secrecy, there's a growing number of individuals living with HIV who are finding ways to raise awareness. Yuen Chan went to Xionzhuang in Henan Province to find out how.
