Curriculum materials for middle and high school teachers on http://www.PLANetWIRE.org.

New York – As part of a new international effort known as Saving Women’s Lives, curriculum materials for middle and high school teachers are being made available on the world wide web at http://www.PLANetWIRE.org. The Saving Women’s Lives curricula provide an opportunity to educate young people about the challenges and issues that confront women, among them education, family health and world population growth.

The curricula will inspire lesson plans for many different subjects and will show how human rights, health care, environmental issues, population issues, education and political empowerment are all interrelated:

 Science teachers can use the materials to explore the link between global climate changes and the complexities of population pressures.
 Social Studies teachers may help students explore their own perception of gender roles and identify links between female literacy and status.
 Health educators can use the materials to underline the importance of health care, and women’s lack of access to basic health services.
 Math teachers can plan lessons around the exponential growth of the world’s population and consumption of natural resources and assist students to interpret graph data.
 Language Arts teachers may help students to explore why girls in many less developed countries receive less education and other opportunities than boys do.
 Family Life educators can incite students to think about gender equity, social justice, distribution of wealth and food, and economic progress.

All of these critical issues can be explored within a context that illuminates the historical and political implications of saving women’s lives. Teachers who use the curriculum are encouraged to share their comments and experiences by writing to lawidi@douglasgould.com
