The Council was set up in 1997, to advocate for greater business involvement in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. MTV Networks International assumed the chairmanship in 2000, and Richard Holbrooke was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer in June 2001. The Council has recently established a new Secretariat in New York.
