Answer: The United States spends less than one percent (1%) of the federal budget on foreign assistance, including military aid, and less than one-half of one percent (0.5%) on development and humanitarian programs, such as family planning, agriculture and education. FY2001 spending on international family planning programs total $425 million through the U.S. Agency for International Development and $25 million through the United Nations Population Fund.

The current funding level is actually a decrease from 1995 levels, when the United States spent $542 million.As a proportion of its GNP, the US spends the least amount of any industrialized nation on international family planning.
