Mother's Day

Where are the best and worst places in the world to be a mother?

Groundbreaking study reveals where mothers and children thrive, and where they don't.

Save the Children's State of the World's Mothers 2000, contains the first-ever ranking of the well-being of mothers and children in 106 countries, turning the world's attention to the critical link between motherhood and child survival.

The report compares 20 industrialized nations and 86 in the developing world on 10 key factors reflecting the status of their mothers - six indicators on maternal health, literacy and political status and four indicators on child health and education. It provides a comprehensive look at the world's two billion mothers and the critical impact their welfare has on children and the world's future.

CALL TO ACTION
Save the Children recommends steps that countries can and must take to improve the lives of the world's mothers and their children:

  • Ensure access to quality education for both women and girls.
  • Ensure that all women have access to high-quality, voluntary family planning services
  • Improve current research and conduct new studies that focus specifically on mothers.

Close the gap in mothers' and children's well-being among marginalized populations in industrialized countries.
