April 15, 2004: Hundreds of thousands of women and men are expected to descend on the nation’s capital for the historic April 25 March for Women’s Lives. Their message is the U.S. government must promote women’s human rights and protect access to reproductive health services. At the same time, the Bush administration has made promoting global women’s rights a cornerstone of its compassionate message to American women.

How close is the Bush administration rhetoric on global women’s issues to the reality? A special edition of the “Global Women’s Issues Scorecard” was released April 19 to evaluate administration statements and recent actions on global reproductive health and women’s rights issues. Speakers included key co-sponsors of the March for Women’s Lives.

Grades were issued on Bush administration statements and actions on HIV/AIDS, international family planning, UNFPA and global women’s rights. For background on topics and scores, go to www.WglobalScorecard.org.
