Description: New Reports from The Population Council/Frontiers in Reproductive Health Program: Female Genital Cutting
Senegal
An evaluation of the Tostan approach, the Village Empowerment Program, revealed that women who participated in the education program have higher levels of knowledge and improved attitudes concerning gender-based violence, FGC, and reproductive health.
Approval rates of FGC decreased significantly, but not all participants changed attitudes to FGC. However there was a significant and sizeable decrease in reported cutting of young daughters.

Burkina Faso
A project to test the replication of the Tostan approach in Burkina Faso demonstrated the feasibility of replicating this model by another NGO in a different setting. The Village Empowerment Program contributed to a significant increase in awareness about women's health and FGC, both among women and men participating in the program.
More than 90 percent of people interviewed reported having discussed FGC, and more than half had been present at the public declaration organized in May 2003.
