Sri Lanka, January 18, 2005--Sri Lanka’s tsunami-ravaged people are receiving immediate and practical help from UNFPA, the UN Population Fund, and the U.S. government should support that agency, visiting members of the U.S. Congress said today.
At a news conference ending their three-day visit here, the five representatives promised to press for renewal of U.S. funding for UNFPA. “We are here as the eyes and ears of our colleagues” in Congress, said Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY), leader of the delegation, “and we will support the efforts of UNFPA and other agencies in rebuilding Sri Lanka.” The Bush administration has refused for three years to spend funds Congress appropriated for UNFPA. |
