WASHINGTON— For 75 years, the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) has led the way in providing timely and objective information on U.S. and international population trends and their implications. To celebrate this anniversary, the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Environmental Change and Security Project will host PRB President William P. Butz and three PRB experts who will discuss evidence-based approaches to population policy and programs:
• Reports of human-rights abuses—such as Ugandan girls forced into marriage by rebels, or Sri Lankan maids abused in wealthy countries—often do not examine the subtle yet powerful relationship between gender norms and reproductive health. International Programs Director Nancy Yinger will review the growing body of evidence that international reproductive health programs must explicitly address women’s positions in society to achieve their objectives.
• Since the historic 1994 population conference in Cairo, international support for family planning has eroded. Technical Director Lori Ashford will discuss reasons for the loss, offer evidence in support of these programs, and describe strategies for rekindling interest in family planning.
• Drawing on his experience in the Philippines, Technical Director Roger-Mark De Souza will show that working on population, health, and environment concerns simultaneously offers better livelihood opportunities, preserves the environment, and improves people's health.
