The Population Council’s FRONTIERS Program is pleased to announced a presentation by Dr. Ian Askew on:
Addressing the RH Needs of Adolescents Perinatally Infected with HIV
Date: Monday, September 10
Time: 2:00 – 4:00
Where: Room 8.07 B/C, Ronald Reagan Building, Washington, DC
Until recently, most infants infected perinatally with HIV died within the first two years of life. With the advent of ARVs, however, an increasing proportion is now living on to be children, adolescents and adults. As ARV programs roll out, there will be an increasing number of people growing to be adolescents who are HIV+, know their status and are seeking to become sexually active and have children. Many countries in Africa are now just beginning to come to terms with this new phenomenon, but very little is known about the needs and desires of these adolescents, or about appropriate programming to meet these needs.
The Population Council’s FRONTIERS program is undertaking innovative research in Uganda to learn more about the lives of these adolescents and will be developing the first generation of tools to assist those providing them with care and support. Dr. Ian Askew will present the findings from this research and describe plans for developing and testing counseling tools with a group of NGOs and hospitals in Uganda.
CAs are Invited! Please contact Jewel Gausman (jgausman@usaid.gov) for more information. Guests will need to be pre-cleared for entrance into the Ronald Reagan Building.
