On the eve of World AIDS Day, students, women's rights advocates, and religious leaders will march to and rally at the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator to demand that the U.S. government cut the red tape on global HIV prevention programs under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
Who: 50+ community members, students, and religious leaders
What: A rally calling on the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC) to Start Taking Effective Prevention Seriously by taking necessary STEPS to address HIV prevention for women and youth worldwide. Using giant scissors and red tape, those rallying will call on the Global AIDS Coordinator to "cut the red tape" that impedes critical HIV prevention steps from being taken.
Where: James Monroe Park, Pennsylvania Avenue, 21st, and I (EYE) Street, NW, Washington, D.C.
When: 12:40pm, Friday, November 30, 2007.
Why: U.S. global HIV prevention policies are failing to protect lives, especially those of women and youth. It is critical that OGAC--the U.S. agency that oversees the implementation of PEPFAR--pledge its support to take the STEPS necessary to ensure that global HIV prevention strategies are effective and address the needs of women and youth. With PEPFAR due for reauthorization by Congress in the upcoming months, World AIDS Day offers an important opportunity to demand that OGAC Start Taking Effective Prevention Seriously.
Photo Opportunity: Dozens of demonstrators will gather with red tape and a giant cardboard pair of scissors to call on the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator to join efforts to "cut the red tape" around global HIV prevention policy.
Co-sponsors: Advocates for Youth, Center for Health and Gender Equity, Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations
