American Spending on Reproductive Health and Population Programs Trails Other Countries’, Despite U.S. Claims |
The United States has long been a leader in providing funding for contraceptives, safe motherhood programs and girls’ education, but the country does not now lead the world in spending on reproductive health programs and commodities proportionate to its GDP, as the State Department asserts. In fact, the United U.S. ranks last among the 22 major industrial countries donor countries in expenditures for foreign aid in terms of Gross National Income (GNI).
When it comes to spending on population programs, the U.S. may give the most in terms of amount, but it contributes far less than its fair share, since the country’s GNI is larger than that of Japan, Germany, Britain, France and Italy combined. |

Breaking the Silence: The Global Gag Rule’s Impact on Unsafe Abortion |
This report by the Center for Reproductive Rights gives a voice to advocates in countries where the gag rule has impeded their efforts to slow down spiraling rates of unsafe abortion. Center researchers conducted more than 100 in-depth interviews in four countries—Ethiopia, Kenya, Peru, and Uganda—with a broad cross-section of actors including NGOs that have accepted USAID funding and are therefore "gagged" from advocating for abortion. |

Safe Motherhood Fact Sheet |
Pregnancy and childbirth can be extremely dangerous. Every minute, a woman dies from complications of pregnancy and childbirth somewhere in the world ¯ at least 530,000 deaths per year. For each one who dies, another 30 to 50 suffer debilitating injury, infection or disease. Maternal mortality represents the greatest disparity between rich and poor countries, with 99 percent of maternal deaths occurring in the developing world. In sub-Saharan Africa, one woman in 16 dies from pregnancy or childbirth, but only one woman in 4,000 dies in western Europe. Most of these casualties could be prevented if women had access to basic medical care during pregnancy, childbirth and the post-partum period. |

Three Decades of Legal Abortion: New Research and Analysis |
The U.S. abortion rate continues to decline and is now at the lowest level since 1974--21.3 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44 in 2000--according to new research from The Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI). The abortion rate peaked in 1980 and 1981 at 29.3 abortions per 1,000 women. In 2000, a total of 1.31 million pregnancies ended in abortion, down from a high of 1.61 million in 1990. This information was gathered as part of AGI's 13th survey of all known abortion providers in the United States; AGI first collected data for 1973. |

Condoms Count: 2006 Update is Population Action International’s (PAI) most recent study on funding levels and the quantities of condoms provided by bilateral donors and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities. In its findings, PAI shows that overall donor support for condoms in the developing world has remained largely unchanged over the past few years, despite 2.7 million new HIV infections occurring every year. First published in 2002, Condoms Count is updated every two years. PAI discloses donor support for condoms as part of its tracking of overall donor support to reproductive health programs and policies, including HIV prevention. |
