Story Summary:

Friday, March 8th is International Women's Day, which will be celebrated in the United States with Laura Bush at the United Nations an by countries across the world with hundreds of activities.

Concurrently, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is sponsoring cargo jet flights into Kabul, Afghanistan this week carrying equipment and supplies for three maternity hospitals and two schools for women and girls. The UNFPA effort is part of its ongoing support of the interim Afghanistan administration, aimed at saving lives and improving the reproductive health of Afghan women.

An information team from UNFPA visited Kabul last month and has produced a short video (TRT 4:45) and several news reports detailing the Fund's assistance efforts in Afghanistan. The reports include an interview with Dr. Sima Samar, head of Afghanistan's Ministry of Women's Affairs. Dr. Samar's interview focuses on her priorities for Afghan women.
